Agriculture is the primary means of employment, but industry, commerce, and services account for the 80% of the gross domestic product. Thailand is one of the world's largest producers of rice, and this accounts for much of the country's agricultural output.
 

In the last few years electronics, computers and integrated circuits, have become a major export earner and look set to play and increasing role in the future.

Oil refineries, chemical plants, steel mills and similar industries are mainly centered around Sriracha and Map ta Phut just east of Rayong.

 

Since the early 1980's tourism has been the country's leading source of foreign exchange, and has been the main contributor to the growth in the service sector. Currently Thailand, like many countries in Southeast Asia, is facing economic problems, which will probably take one or two years to solve.

However, the dramatic fall in the value of the Thai currency has made exports much more competitive, and the western visitor to Thailand will be pleasantly surprised at today's exchange rate.
