Article 1: Name
The organization shall be called “Thai Student Association at Arizona State University.”
Article 2: Purposes
2.1 To represent Thai students at Arizona State University and the Thai community in the Phoenix, Metropolitan area, Arizona.
2.2 To promote understanding and friendship among the members and other organizations at Arizona State University.
2.3 To provide assistance in cultural and social adjustments for incoming Thai students to the Arizona State University.
Article 3: Memberships
Thai students or anyone who has an affiliation to Thai students or Thai culture and lives in the Phoenix, Metropolitan area can apply for a membership. The members are classified into three categories.
3.1 “Regular Member” is a Thai student enrolled at any of the campuses of Arizona State University. By default, students who fall into this category will be grated memberships if they apply.
3.2 “Associate Member” is person who is a non student but who has an interest in participating in the organization. The membership in this classification will be granted by approval of the president or committee.
3.3 “Alumni” is a regular member who graduated from the university but who still wants to maintain a relationship with the organization. By default, the status of regular members will be changed to “Alumni” after graduation, unless the note of leaving is presented.
Members of this organization shall be free to leave the organization without fear of retribution or harassment. In the event of behavior misconducts, the committee has the absolute power to dismember the persons who have caused or may cause significant problems for the organization.
Article 4: Nondiscrimination
The organization shall not discriminate against any person based on race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, disability or sexual orientation.
Article 5: Meetings
5.1 A general assembly meeting shall be held at least once a year. The main objectives of this meeting shall be to elect the new president of the organization, to set up the new committee, and to vote on any pending constitution and/or amendments to the constitution. In this meeting, the regular and associate members shall discuss, revise and/or vote on the activities proposed by the president.
5.2 The president may schedule meetings as required or deemed necessary.
Article 6: Finance
The finance of this organization consists of donations from the members, individuals or groups of individuals who acknowledge the purposes of this organization and from fund raising activities entered into by the members of this organization.
Article 7: Committee
The committee of this organization shall consist of a president, a vice president, a secretary, a treasurer, a faculty advisor, and other officers. The president must be a student enrolled at any of the campuses of the Arizona State University and the length of service on the committee shall be one year.
7.1 The responsibilities of each officer shall include, but not be limited to the following:
• The President
o shall represent the interests of this organization within the community of the Arizona State University
o shall preside at all meetings
o shall cast the tie-breaking vote in the event of a tie-vote
o shall perform such other duties as are incumbent on such an office
• The Vice President
o shall assist the president and exercise the authority of the president in the absence of the president, and
o shall oversee all committee standings
• The Secretary
o shall record all documents of the organization,
o shall notify members about upcoming schedules, prepare press articles, and keep minutes of the meetings, and
o shall maintain the role of members in organization.
• The Treasurer
o shall be in charge of all money and other valuable assets belonging to the organization,
o shall be responsible for all records and/or documents regarding the financial affairs of the organization, and
o shall be responsible for monitoring and reporting the financial status of the organization.
7.2 Procedure for filling a vacant office
If for any reason, the president must withdrawn from the office during the service term, the vice president shall assume the position of president. If any of the other elected officers cannot fulfill their term of service for any reason, the president shall appoint other members or the organization to fulfill the responsibilities of the vacated office.
7.3 Duties of the faculty advisors and mode of selection
The faculty advisors shall be appointed by the committee. The faculty advisors shall supervise all activities of this organization.
Article 8: General Election
Before the end of the service term, the sitting president shall prepare a slate of proposed presidential candidates from the membership list and announce the candidates for voting in a general election. Regular and associate members have an equal right to vote for office of president. The one who receives the majority vote from the attending members will be appointed as the president-elect. The president shall form a new committee to administer the organization and this committee shall appoint a new faculty advisor to supervise the activities of the organization
Article 9: Amendment
Any member desiring to propose an amendment to this constitution may present a petition stating the desired amendment to the secretary of this organization. The petition must be signed by a minimum of twelve regular and/or associate members who support the petition. The petition shall then be distributed to all members of the organization. The proposed amendment shall be voted on at the general assembly meeting. Two-third favorable votes of the attending members are required for the adoption of the proposed amendment.
